ATIF Inc the Australian Timber Importers Federation has been established for over 20 years and represents the interests of the timber importer / wholesaler sector of the national timber industry. It is responsible for coordinating the State activities of timber importers and wholesalers and identifying issues that are of National significance and therefore can be best handled nationally. For example, matters associated with customs, shipping, AQIS, are considered national issues.
The ATIF Inc, represents its sector at the FWPA Market Knowledge advisory group and coordinates suitable market development programmes that benefits imported timber products. Funding of such programmes is negotiated with the Forest and Wood products Research and Development Corp.
The ATIF Inc lobbies and liaises with the Federal Government on various issues from time to time e.g. Tropical wood imports, certification of timber imports as to their sustainability and sourcing from well managed forests throughout the World.
Whilst there is a viable market for imported timber in Australia the ATIF Inc will be doing all it can to facilitate better market access for its members and their products to those markets.

Timber importers are anticipating another busy year in 2011 following increasing activity in 2010. Technical manager for the Australian Timber Importers Federation (ATIF) John Halkett says the prospect of a continuing strong Australian dollar together with increasing manufacturing and importing sophistication is likely to see imported timber products grow in significance and be central to the performance of the building industry, including keeping housing affordability under check. |
